Kicking in the movies…

Posted on January 29, 2005

We watched Bridget Jones 2 tonight at TGV One Utama and the little fellow inside of me was kicking about 70% of the time during the movie! It felt as though the baby was enjoying the movie as much as I did. The funny thing was, last week, when all of us watched Blade 3 at Simon’s house, the baby was kicking most of the time during the movie….what does that mean? Does it mean that the baby was hungry? annoyed? or was he/she just enjoying the sound effects? Funny thing….
Also, I have been feeling really hot these days especially at nights…am not sure whether it is due to the whether or not…but I did read somewhere that pregnant women tend to feel really hot…Thank God for Air Conditioning!….

26 Jan 2005 - 22 weeks

Posted on January 27, 2005

Today, 1′m exactly 22 weeks pregnant. I find it increasingly more difficult to move about now. I can feel my belly stretching - as though the muscles on my abdomen are stretching when I stand upright. I am beginning to find it more difficult to sleep. The baby’s kicks are getting harder - but they don’t hurt. My appetite is normal and I eat most during lunch time! I snack abit but not as much as during my first trimester (where I was hungry every 2 hours!!!) Apart from the tensed feeling in my belly, I feel good!
Spoke to my parents this evening and I am now on a hunt for a confinement lady to look after my baby and I after my delivery. My mum reckons that she may not be able to handle it during my 1 month confinement and fear of an increase in her high blood pressure. Therefore, I am on the look-out for a confinement lady….where do one find one? An agency? Word of mouth? I am not going to be checked into some confinement centre - like the one at SS2….ARGH! It looks more like a mental institution for ladies….

22 Jan 2005 - 21 weeks

Today, I am 21 weeks and 3 days into my pregnancy. I’ve already started to feel the baby kicking since I was 19 weeks pregnant. The baby is most active in the evenings between 8pm - 10:30pm. It feels kinda funny to feel the baby kick inside of me. It doesn’t hurt or anything but it just feels - funny :) I feel bloated as ever and have started wearing pregnancy trousers! However, most of my colleagues reckon that they can hardly see my belly! My belly button has not popped out yet but according to what I have read, it should pop out towards the end of the 5th month. Yikes..

Baby at 19 weeks.
During my usual checkup with Dr Suzanna Huam, our baby seemed to be on all fours this time! Could see the eyes, fingers, feet, spine, brain, heartbeat etc but the Dr could not confirm the sex of the baby yet. She said that she can only confirm it in my next check up i.e. on 5 Feb 2005.

I have recently been in touch with an old primary school mate of mine (Beth) who is a mother to a lovely 19 month old daughter and she has been giving me alot of tips! She has also kindly created a long list of what to buy for new mothers & babies and boy oh boy…the list was really long! Just for kicks, here is the list :

1. sleepsuits - quite troublesome to wear, but keeps them warm at night. (got long ones and short ones. many types)
2. mittens (hands and feet) - you need a few pairs cos you will need to change 2x daily
3. milk bottles - size small (qty : 6) - as long as your hubby help you to wash them after each feed, then it’s more than enuff.
4. bottle steriliser - personally i prefer boiling. i occasionally use a steriliser, but i realise that it ain’t as clean as boiling.
5. diaper rash cream - Drapolene
6. nappy - depending if your mother-in-law have some plans of using them. comes in a pack of 12 or 24 i think.
7. nappy sheets - only if you buy nappies. this is used as a liner for the nappy.
8. face towels - soft ones please!!!
9. regular size bath towels
10. medium size face towels - check with your MIL if she needs this. i used them as a blanket cos quilts are too big for newborns
11. playpen / cot
12. baby wipes
13. baby powder
14. baby shampoo / liquid shower soap - you will only use a few drops each time
15. baby powder box (remove the puff. it is believed that when you puff it, the powder will fly around and cause asthma)
16. facial puff - to replace the powder puff. they do sell them at baby shops. it can use for adults, but it’s actually for newborns.
17. cotton balls - i used them to wash natalie’s bum when she was newborn. gentle to the skin. to clean the shit man. (see if your MIL needs it)
18. baby mattress + bedsheet
19. cot bumper - only if you buy a cot. playpen don’t need
20. nutmeg oil - for tummy after bath. can get from chinese medicine shop
21. gripe water - check with MIL. some people don’t give their kids. it’s good for teething, and prevent wind and colic for newborns.22. bathtub + bath rubber mat (to prevent baby slipping from your hands)
23. rubber mat - a huge one. to keep mattress free from urine leaks / shit. usually used when changing diapers. newborns like to pee and catch you unaware.. hehe..
24. pacifier - not sure if you encourage it. i bought 1 to standby, but only used it for 2 months and she didn’t want it after that.
25. long sleeve shirts - qty : about 10 (up to you)
26. short sleeve shirts - qty : about 10 (there’s this “rabbit brand”. material is thin, but damn good for the baby. not too hot for them. none in singapore)
27. small pail - for ’sponging’ in the evening. newborns bath only once a day around 8-9am.
28. baby mobile - good distraction for them.. haha..
29. tongs - for picking up bottles from steriliser
30. car seat
31. pram - don’t buy Peg Perego. Mclaren is good. there’s another brand that costs $700, and it’s very light. good stuff. can’t recall the name.
32. Big safety pins - to pin the nappy together.
33. long pants - those that do not have holes at the 2 ends. (know what i mean?)
34. baby rocker - there are many different types.
35. Diapers - should be provided by the hospital. 1 pack complimentary. if not, Pampers Premium for NewBorns is good.
36. mouth cloth - they do sell those cloths specially for cleaning the baby’s mouth.

what not to buy yet:
1. pillows - they too young to sleep on it
2. blankets - too small to use. to prevent suffocation
3. steriliser pill - don’t need at all. this is used by dropping it into the steriliser i think. but my friends didn’t encourage it.
4. bibs - for 4 months when they start on semi-solids ie. cereals.
5. cloth beannie - i used them when i bring her out for shopping at 3 months. to keep the fontanelle (hole in the skull) warm.

Remember :
1. pls make sure you use only cooled / warm boiled water to clean your baby. do not use tap water. only from 4 months.
2. do not bathe too long for newborns. keep all windows closed before stripping baby.
3. when you buy diapers, buy for NewBorns. don’t buy S. you will use at least 1 pack per week for the first month.
4. buy cheap brand of clothes. they grow pretty quickly. unless you going out, then buy branded ones lah…

On the 17th Nov 2004, I was ill for 2 weeks and got a bit worried so I decided to visit my OB/GYN and got an ultra sound. Thankfully, the baby was healthy and in fact - he/she was very active!
